BRIEF PROFILE OF TANO SOUTH MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY

The Tano South Municipal is one of the 260 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana, and forms part of the 6 Municipalities and Districts in the Ahafo Region. The Tano South Municipal was carved from the Tano District (established by LI 1765 of 2004) and by a Legislative Instrument LI 2268 of 2017, the Tano South Municipal Assembly was established.

The Municipal capital Bechem, is on the Sunyani-Kumasi first class road (asphalt) and about 54 km from Sunyani and 76 km from Kumasi. The Municipality lies in the southern part of the Ahafo Region between latitudes 7º00”N and 7º25” N and longitudes 1º45” W and 2º15” W and covers an area of 489.0 square kilometres.

The Municipality is bordered to the north and east by the Offinso Municipal and Ahafo Ano South West District, on the south by the Ahafo Ano North Municipal and on its west and south-west by Tano North Municipal. The population of the Municipality according to the 2010 Population and Housing Census stands at 78,129 with 38,299 males and 39,830 females.

VISION STATEMENT

The vision of the Tano South Municipal Assembly is to create an optimistic, self-confident and prosperous Municipality.

MISSION STATEMENT

Tano South exists to creatively explore the human, natural and financial resources of the Municipality in a sustainable manner for the provision and equitable distribution of basic socio-economic infrastructure and services through the active participation of all stakeholders in the development process for the betterment of the people in the Municipality.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ASSEMBLY

Tano South Municipal Assembly performs the following under-listed responsibilities:

  • Political and administrative authority in the Municipality. They provide guidance, give direction to and supervise all administrative authorities in the Municipal.
  • Deliberative, legislative and executive functions.
  • Preparation and submission of the Development Plans of the Municipal through the Regional Co-ordinating Council to the National Development Planning Commission for approval.
  • Preparation and submission of Budget of the District through the Regional Co-ordinating Council for approval from the Minister of Finance.
  • Formulate and execute plans, programmes and strategies for the effective mobilization of resources necessary for the overall development of the Municipal.
  • Guide, encourage and support Sub – Municipal Local Government bodies, Public Agencies and Local Communities to perform their roles in the execution of approved development plans.
  • Initiate and encourage other persons or bodies to undertake projects under the approved Development Plans of the Municipal.
  • Monitor the execution of projects under approved development plans, access and evaluate their impact on the people’s development as well as Municipal and National economy at large.
